Supporting LGBTQ Youth & Allies
As the parent of a LGBTQ graduate, I’m proud of our district’s and our community’s embrace of LGBTQ youth and their families, but there is plenty of work left to do. Our young people live and learn in our schools, but they also live in our country, which demonstrates ignorance and hate regularly.
Our district and community have demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity and acceptance for LGBTQ+ students and their families.
Despite that commitment, BVSD faces the same disturbing gaps in student well-being among the LGBTQ students that we see across the state and the nation. Our LGBTQ students are more likely to report depression or suicidal thoughts, and more likely to attempt suicide than other students. We must do more to foster and protect their well-being.
By fostering a culture of understanding and respect, we can create an environment where all students, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, feel safe, celebrated, and supported.
